If you go on vacation during the winter, leave your thermostat on 55 degrees to keep your pipes from freezing. Its a good idea to shut your water off, especially if your going to be gone for a long time.
When the temperature dips below freezing, let some water drip from a faucet on the first floor of the house.Avoid using caustic, acid-based chemical drain cleaners if at all possible, as they may result in damaged pipes.If water pressure from your facuet seems low or the flow pattern is inconsistent, it is recommended that you clean the aerator (the round attachment at the end of the spout). this can be done by unscrewing the part, then using a toothbrush dipped in vinegar to removed dirt or trapped particles.
